The project Amigos da Jubarte hereby announces its 1st Photography Contest themed “Where is the whale?”. The 1st Whale Photography Contest of the project Amigos da Jubarte is a non-profit initiative.
This contest aims to stimulate the develop of empathy for marine biodiversity through photography by focussing on the species humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) which has great potential to become the symbol of Brazil’s marine conservation. This contest is an instrument to promote environmental awareness aiming to strengthen the connection of people with nature. The contest will be promoted on social media, through the website, and spontaneous media.
Participants are invited to submit their photos and videos between the 30/08/2019 and the 01/01/2020 on the Amigos da Jubarte website: INSCRIÇÃO
CONTEST SCHEDULE

Announcement of the winners selected by the jury and the winners honor menitions selected by popular vote: 17 Januany 2020.
SUBMISSION - IMAGE FORMAT
Files have to contain the name of the participant and the title of the submitted work. Example: name-of-author_name-of-picture.jpg.
Photos have to be submitted in “.jpg” format, with at least 3000 pixels on the widest side. The quality of the submitted file will be evaluated (we recommend that images are saved at the highest resolution possible, not exceeding 20MB).
Videos may be published using any free online platform (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) and must have a minimum resolution of 720p (1280×720 px or similar).

João Marcos Rosa: Fotojournalist, co-owner of the agency Nitro Imagens, published in the National Geographic Brasil, BBC Wildlife, GEO and Terra Mater magazine. Author of the two books “Harpia” and “Fauna de Carajás”.

João Paulo Krajewski: Biologist, ecologist, videographer and nature photographer. Host for Rede Globo and Animal Planet, president of Natural History Brazil.

Leonardo Merçon: Wildlife and Conservation Photographer, president of the Últimos Refúgios Institute and Chief of Communication and Media for the Amigos da Jubarte project.

Roberto Sakai: Director of Arts for the National Geographic magazine.
WHALES
The category “WHALES” is open to photos that show any species of whales, regardless of location or their behavior. This category accepts photos of whales in their natural habitat and photos that show behavioral patterns, like feeding, migration, and interactions with other marine animals, among others.
CREATURES OF THE SEA
The category “CREATURES OF THE SEA” is open to photos that show marine species, including (but not limited to): cetaceans, fish, crustaceans, corals, birds, mammals and reptiles. Animals have to be shown in their natural habitat.
THE OCEAN
The category “OCEAN” is open to photos that show the ocean. This may include landscapes, pollution or threats.
MAKING OF
The category “MAKING OF” is open to photos that show whale conservation projects and activists in action. This may include whale watching or other recreational activities centered around whales. Making of photos should allow a quick glimpse behind the scenes and reveal the people behind the conservation project.
VIDEO
The category “VIDEO” seeks the best whale video. This may include unusual or interesting behaviors filmed during a whale watching expedition, aerial shots or underwater photos (but only in places where swimming with whales is allowed).
ILLUSTRATION and ARTS
The category “ILLUSTRATION and ARTS” is open to other mediums, like graffiti, ink, color pencil, watercolors, collage, montage, etc. as well as digital illustrations with focus on ocean conservation and ocean landscapes, including imaginary scenes. Submissions in this category have to be unpublished and be the creation of the submitting participant.

Prizes have to be collected at the office of the Últimos Refúgios Institute (partner organization of the Amigos da Jubarte project). If the winner is not located in Espírito Santo, prizes may be sent by mail (if the winner pays for the shipment and for his own travel expenses).
Category WHALES: :
1st Place - 1 camera + 1 whale watching expedition with the Amigos da Jubarte project + Book of the 2017 results of the Amigos da Jubarte project + the winning photo will be show at the exhibition of the Amigos da Jubarte project.
2nd Place - 1 whale watching expedition with the Amigos da Jubarte project + Book of the 2017 results of the Amigos da Jubarte project + the winning photo will be show at the exhibition of the Amigos da Jubarte project.
3rd Place - Book of the 2017 results of the Amigos da Jubarte project + the winning photo will be show at the exhibition of the Amigos da Jubarte project.
Other categories:
1st Place - 1 whale watching expedition with the Amigos da Jubarte project + Book of the 2017 results of the Amigos da Jubarte project + the winning photo will be show at the exhibition of the Amigos da Jubarte project.
2nd Place - Book of the 2017 results of the Amigos da Jubarte project + the winning photo will be show at the exhibition of the Amigos da Jubarte project.
3rd Place - The winning photo will be show at the exhibition of the Amigos da Jubarte project.
NOTE: The DSLR camera with lenses will be awarded prizes only for the main category "WHALE PHOTOS"!
OTHER INFORMATION
Submitted images and videos will be used by the Amigos da Jubarte project to advertise the contest. Photos, videos, and illustrations remain property of the artist. If the Amigos da Jubarte project wishes to use any submitted images for marketing purposes beyond communicating the contest and its results the rightful owner has to be asked for permission.
